Washing Machine: Reloaded

The Challenge:
Is it possible to take every part of a washing machine, and upcycle it? Reinterpreting, redefining, and recontextualising it’s various bits to create tangible, valuable, and functional products that don’t just sell on their recycled credentials. We are calling on designers, makers, craftsmen, hackers, electronics enthusiasts, jewelers, and anyone interested to come together to meet this challenge.if you want to take part, just mail us! diy@atomsandbits.net

The Brief

Take one washing machine and in two days upcycle it into one or many functional products, which must then be sold.

The incentive

As well as having some fun, doing your bit for the environment, keeping the money you make from item sale, and assistance taking ideas further (should you wish).

Judging

Teams will be judged by the following criteria:
Money made
Parts used
Aesthetic and Functional properties

The Rules

5 teams of 5 will prepare to do battle.
Please register as a team, if you don't have a team please register here and we will try and find you a team, alternatively you can participate in our satellite events.

Additional "junk" products may be cannabalised to provide additional parts for designs, however all scrap left over from cannabalised junk must also be recycled. Junk will be provided, teams may also bring their own complementary junk with them.

Products must possess functional value

"Garnishing" is not allowed - ie. sticking on a piece of material that you can't think of anything clever to do with and trying to claim that it has artistic or aesthetic merit.

Trading of scrap parts between teams may take place.

Trading of skills between teams may take place.

Projects must be finished and ready for display by the end of the second day.

Participants are responsible for conducting themselves in a safe manner, and creating products which can be used safely.

Participants have 1 month after the event to sell all of the products produced.

Any product scrap left over must be recycled by the participants, with cost being deducted from final profits.

Second day scavengers may be used as an additional resource.

(nb. this is for those people who don't want to put in a full day, but interested to get involved, or who didn't find a team to join)

Bring your own junk recycling project, or find out what bits the "Machine Teams" are wasting, and put them to good use.

Judging

Individuals will be assessed on the following criteria:

Products must have functional value

You may trade freely or scavenge

You may assist teams if they request it of you.

Products must be finished and ready for display at the end of the day.
